2022 Prairie Art Book Fair
Plug In ICA’s Prairie Art Book Fair will be the third iteration of the bi-annual event. Over 15 vendors will gather for three days in our galleries to share an array of printed matter and other publication ephemera. The vendors include independent artists, art collectives, artist-run organizations and publishers from across the prairies and beyond. Alongside the fair, we will conduct a string of associated programming activities including a karaoke night, workshops, and a panel discussion. More details on the events will be released leading up to the fair.
Prairie Art Book Fair was initially established as a way to bridge the relationship between contemporary art and publishing with a regional focus. Now it has evolved beyond the prairies to become an alternative way to display and share art practices that extend tangentially into various published artifacts.
The fair and associated events are free and open to all. Please join us to learn more about publishing in the Prairies, find a new favourite book, participate in events and mingle with local artists, writers and publishers.
The programming events include the following:
FRIDAY 8 PM - 10 PM
Prairie Art Book Fair Kick-Off Reception & Karaoke/Listening Party with Peter Morin and Jimmie Kilpatrick’s Love Songs to End Colonization
Both events will be hosted on the rooftop of the gallery.
SATURDAY 3PM
Panel Discussion with Edmonton-based food culture collective, Hungry Zine
Hosted in Gallery Two
SUNDAY 12 - 4 PM
Writing Workshop with Apophony Press
Apophony Press is a publication platform based in Saskatoon led by Rebecca La Marre and they are hosting a FREE workshop as part of the Prairie Art Book Fair. The objectives of the workshop are to explore the intersection of literature and art-criticism, developing new approaches to writing in/about the visual arts that move away from traditional theories of what writing in the arts can be.
The workshop involves both writing activities using provided prompts and custom tool kit along with a group discussion. The tool kit includes clay tablets treated with a white-board surface that participants can write on and erase. To arrive at the depth of discussion that fully integrates practical action with theory, the workshop will require around 4 hours.
The workshop will be led in English but participants are encouraged to conduct the writing activities in whatever language is most comfortable.
Readings will be provided in advance but are not mandatory for participation.
Snacks and breaks will be provided.
Hosted in Gallery Two
