Newzones is pleased to present Languorous; a solo exhibition of work by Canadian contemporary painter, Anda Kubis.
Languorous is an accumulation of attuned decisions, yielding time for the pleasures of observation. Having come to fruition late in summer, these paintings coalesce immediate swipes of the brush, modulated fields, blurs, and rich radiating layers of colour. They are vivid realizations of time spent in and around the studio.
Now working in the Kawartha Lakes region of Ontario, Kubis’ studio is surrounded by forests, lakes, and farms. Acutely aware of seasonal shifts, her work embraces the rhythms of nature, changes in light, and patterns of growth – while distances are overcome with technology and digital connection. Kubis’ paintings take a long time to create, requiring the artist to enter a state of flow, working on many paintings at once, capturing daily reflections and the atmospheres that surround her. Activating each painting through new additions of colour immediately provokes new visual relationships. The freshness of the air at sunrise, afternoon light streaming through the forest, taking a picture on the walking path in the evening – all these senses are gathered as moments in the paintings. Against the backdrop of a fast-paced world, time in this work becomes languorous. Shimmering with colour and movement, each painting evolves to create a space for the eye to meander. Depending on how you view it, Kubis’ painting either pushes or pulls you into an active place for the imagination to wander, a languorous pleasure if you will.
