Andréa Searle: MAKE/SPACE Mural Project
Andréa Searle, "MAKE/SPACE Mural Project," 2019
We are excited to announce a launch event is coming up for the MAKE/SPACE Mural on Sunday, September 1st! Join us in the upper half of the parking lot at 1110-1114 Langley St (right next to Open Space) from 11-4. The day will be packed with performances by local darlings Quarterback and Looelle, an artist talk by mural artist Andréa Searle, and snacks from Cold Comfort and Tishanna's Kitchen. Keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for more details.
We are thrilled to welcome Victoria-based tattoo artist and illustrator Andréa Searle as our featured artist for this summer’s MAKE/SPACE Mural Project!
We spent the first half of July eagerly awaiting the submission deadline, and weren’t disappointed by the myriad talented artists whose mural proposals graced our inbox.
Andréa’s proposal captured our attention with bright colour, bold design, and a deeply integrated sense of locality and perspective. Their work is inspired by the abstract themes of Dadaism, the bold colours of Michoacana folk art, and the symbolism of Latin American Catholic iconography.
Motivated by the resilience of the Black and Indigenous People of Colour (BIPOC) community in Victoria, Andréa hopes to create with the mural a “reclaimed safe space, a visible reminder to refuel our energy through community bonds, through our ancestral ties, and through sharing and illustrating our stories.”
