Paul Kuhn Gallery is pleased to present RE-FINED, a new series of photographs by Vancouver based artist, Anthony Repath, May 11 through June 3, 2017
Anthony Redpath works within the photographic tradition pioneered by photgraphers Bernd and Hilda Becher, Andreas Gursky and Candida Hofer. Redpath seeks to photograph a contemporary landscape as it is defined by its' industrial structures. Photographing sugar refineries, pulp mills, cooling towers, gas tanks, coal bunkers and silos in neutral light and cropping close to cut out the horizon line, Redpath reveals the subtle relationships between his subjects' complex ribbing, vaulting and peeling skins.
Where as other artist's stand back from their subject matter, Redpath zooms his lens close in. The art critic Sky Gooded observed "where the Bechers stood back from their industrial landscapes, Redpath rushes in." Photographs at such close distance, the buildings become a complicated system of grid like lines and patterns approaching abstraction. The effect is both unnerving and stunning; the viewer is seduced by these large scale photographs whose subject matter emerges slowly.
