Artlink Canada is proud to present “Edge of Perception”, a selling exhibition showcasing a collection of abstract works by artist Ben Gooding from London, England. “Edge of Perception” features an array of artworks which reflect how a small simple pattern can be manipulated to create a complex and multidimensional piece of work. The exhibition will take place in Vancouver, British Columbia from April 20th to May 11th, 2017 at Jaydon Art Gallery, 1091 Hornby Street.

Abstract art materialized around the turn of the 20th century. Emerging on the heels of impressionism and expressionism, abstract art moved away from traditional art forms which focused on recapturing visual elements of the surrounding environment. Instead, abstract art focuses primarily on how brushstrokes, colour, pattern and form can capture emotion and subjectivity. As a result, abstract art can also be referred to as non-representational or non-objective art. Rather than relying on the elements of the natural world, artists can play significantly with the use of colour and form to re-experience an emotion and express pure creation in a composition. Well-known abstract artists include Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky and American artist Jackson Pollock.

Jackson Pollock’s work primarily featured mathematically aesthetic fractal drip patterns. His deliberate use of dripping paint has been closely examined and argued as being highly representative of the calculated and structured qualities of the natural world. This mathematical approach to abstract art is greatly reflected in “Edge of Perception”. Gooding’s striking artworks are created by generating a line or an edge, that he will then repeat hundreds of times over to build his composition. Gooding uses this technique to emphasize how a single line or movement can be so effortless, but when repeated hundreds of times over can create something multidimensional, complex and thought provoking. Gooding’s work embodies the essence of abstract art in that it is the work of pure innovation and imagination. Gooding hopes from his artworks his viewers can take away “the idea that great complexity is derived from great simplicity”.
