Breanna Barrington is an Edmonton-based multimedia artist with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of Alberta. Blending eco-sensibilities with a dash of whimsy, their work has been presented at the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change, Alberta Council for Ukrainian Arts, Mile Zero Dance, hcma Architecture, the WORKS Festival of Visual Arts + Design, among other venues.
In recent years, Breanna has been working to refine an artistic voice around the subjects of Ukrainian diasporic identity and channeling ecological anxiety into hopeful action. These explorations usually orbit around illustration, performance, and bricolage arrangements.
Puzzled together using objects from alleys, recycle centres, thrift stores, and Alberta’s only plastic rat-king, this body of work features a number of eco-vignettes and invitational prompts. Layered through the lens of burnout, renewal, and urban planning, the exhibition “Shorthand Forest” explores the bridge between modernity and the not-so-distant past. The exhibition also includes the artist’s zine library which was constructed from a broken microwave.
