ulthebridge call for submissions 2017
CALL FOR ARTISTS: Your Are Here: art+people=x January 5 – February 23, 2018
Helen Christou Gallery Level 9, Under Library
uLethbridge Art Gallery invites participants for the latest installment in our long running art + people = x series. This year, the project ties in with You Are Here, a series of exhibitions, workshops, performances, and presentations designed to invite a diversity of people in Southern Alberta to find new ways to think about the future of their environment. Artists can explore the theme however they choose and then submit works to the curated exhibition.
To start the conversation (and be eligible to submit for the curated exhibition), artists must participate in at least one of the following events connected with You Are Here:
Culture Vulture, Saturday, September 30. Drop in any time between 11 am and 4 pm. It’s not just for kids: there will be a range of ways to address the day’s topic – “grow”.
Rehearsals in Co-sufficiency: Plant Tenders (and other future currencies)
This public-site project with Lisa Hirmer from Dodolab will run on campus from October 2 – 6. Drop by the Helen Christou Gallery for a conversation with the artist about planning for collective action in these tumultuous times. For more information check ulag.ca or look for posting on the art gallery’s social media.
The Drawing Bar, Thursday October 19, 7 – 9 pm. Meet at the main gallery and join artist Maria Madacky in drawing our environment.
The exhibition will consist of a curated selection from submissions by local artists and art students and will run in the Helen Christou Gallery from January 5 – February 23, 2017. Details on requirements for submitting: Make sure to tell the staff at the events that you want to participate in the exhibition so we know you were there and have your contact information for following up.
Artists of all levels are welcome to submit works and current uLethbridge students are welcome to participate and to submit for the exhibition. Works must be recent and they should connect to the theme of finding new ways to think about the future of the environment.
The work does not need to be created at the Art Gallery events. To be considered for the exhibition, works must be submitted unframed and on paper that fits the gallery’s stock frame sizes: 14” x 18” or 21.5” x 16” or 22” x 28” or 32” x 40” inches.
Gallery staff will mat and frame the works and return the works in the mats. Works that are not on paper might be considered – artists must contact David Smith to discuss these options prior to dropping off the work. Works are to be dropped off at the gallery on Monday December 4, 2017 and accompanied by information for label copy as well as contact information for the artists.
The exhibition will be curated by Maria Madacky, Kirsten Meiszinger, and Josephine Mills. Any questions about submitting to the exhibition, please contact by email David Smith smith@uleth.ca | Preparator/Assistant Curator | 403.329.2161
