Call for entries for a group art exhibit open to all visual artists

Envisioning Women!

Sidney and Gertrude Zack Gallery

May 1st to May 25, 2014

Media: drawing, painting, mixed media, fibre art, sculpture and/or photography.

Theme: The visual art exhibit, ‘Envisioning Women” will be presented by the Sidney and Gertrude Zack Gallery in collaboration with Festival Ha’Rikud, an Israeli dance festival. The theme for Dance Festival in 2014 is “Celebrating Nashim”, which in Hebrew means ‘Celebrating Women’. Dances will be inspired by biblical women like Rachel, Miriam, Esther or Ruth or modern Jewish Women, like Golda Meir, Hannah Szenes, or Naomi Shemer or will showcase traditional rituals performed by women, like shabbat candle lighting, challah making, or the henna ceremony performed before Hindu and North African Weddings. Visual artists are asked to explore similar themes through visual art; to pay tribute to well known female characters from the bible, women in history or modern heroines and/or to highlight traditions in various cultures taken on by women or for women.

All of the artwork, chosen by a jury, will be on display in the Sidney and Gertrude Zack Gallery.

Commission on Sales: The art will be for sale. The Gallery receives a 25% commission.

Application deadline: Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at 4 pm.

Please submit:

 a cheque for the entry fee of $25 made out to the Jewish Community Centre

 artist’s contact information

 a brief artist statement about the art submitted

 curriculum vitae

 Slides, photos or a CD of up to 3 pieces of art on the above theme. Clearly indicate that this is your entry for the “Envisioning Women” Exhibition.

 Please make sure that your application is marked “attention of the Gallery Coordinator.”

 Include a stamped self addressed envelope for the return of the slides, photos or the CD.

For artists who are eligible and wish to be considered for a solo or group show for the gallery’s next season:

Please submit 10 other slides or photos or a CD (Submit PC compatible files only in jpg or tif format with high resolution, individual files should be 0.5MB maximum.) Original artwork will not be accepted. Label the files on the CD. Label photos on the back with title and your name. Each slide should be numbered on the LEFT hand TOP of the slide. The name of the artist should be printed on the RIGHT hand top. The title of the work should be on the BOTTOM.

Also include a numbered typed list of the submitted images including title, size, medium & year and a stamped self addressed envelope so that we can return your slides, photos or CD.

Artists submitting work for the “Envisioning Women” exhibit will receive notification of the jury’s decision by Wed., March 12, 2014 and will be responsible for delivering the art ‘professionally framed’ to the Sidney and Gertrude Zack Gallery between 8 am and 9 am on Tuesday, April 29, 2014 and for picking the art up, if not sold on Monday, May 26, 2014 between 10:30 am & 12:30 pm.

Artists submitting work for a solo or group show in the 2014/2015 gallery season will receive notification by mid July.
