A meditative work of art as a community body

CALGARY – Arts Commons Presents is excited to showcase Calgary artist Chelsea Rushton’s Sankalpa Centre for Dreams and Visions in the Lightbox Studio, running from March 7 to May 28, 2017.

With an MFA in visual art from the University of Calgary and a 500-hour certification as a yoga teacher, Rushton’s work explores through mark-making the information about human bodies and life paths available to practitioners of yoga nidra, or yogic sleep. The work intends to promote sleep, rest, and relaxation as states of receptivity, intelligence, and creativity. Chelsea will also be inviting patrons to come into Lightbox Studio to help her create this larger body of work. Patrons will be lead through meditation practice by the artist and before the collaboration begins. This project is about dedicated ritual as a way create art work.

“My work focuses on the intersections of art, ritual, and spirituality, and the ways in which creative process can document and facilitate personal and collective growth and evolution,” says Rushton. “Drawing, painting, and embroidery become contemplative acts through which I transcribe visions of non-physical, numinous phenomena that arise during meditation.”

The Lightbox Studio at Arts Commons is an experimental studio and exhibition space that promotes studio-based projects, running in 2-3 month intervals.
