In Our Tiny Neighbors: An Artist's Rendition of an Assortment of Microbes Jen Obst creates something beautiful out of what is often seen as ugly, dangerous and even deadly. Her fascination with the microscopic world, particularly infectious microbes, brings about this series of drawings of complicated biological structures. E.coli, penicillin and skin melanoma are amongst the specimens Obst has chosen to explore in her work. Using a variety of mediums such as pastels, ink and graphite, she creates drawings that celebrate the unsettling beauty of these unique pathogens.
Jen Obst is a student artist currently attending Red Deer College in the Visual Art program. She works in both 2D and 3D media with a keen interest in painting, ceramics, and drawing. While in attendance at Red Deer College she was awarded the Golley Ceramics Scholarship and Louise McKinney Scholarship. Obst is pursuing a BFA. Her work has been shown locally in Red Deer at the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery and the Knock Knock Gallery at the Red Deer College.
