And now here is my secret, a very simple secret; it is only with the heart that one can see rightly, what is essential is invisible to the eye. ~Antoine de Saint-Exupery
Capturing memories in a way that a camera cannot, my paintings invite you to explore the subject; quietly discovering what is really there. Each painting is a story waiting to happen. The viewer quietly discovers what is really at the heart of each piece. Within this space I reveal a part of myself and I hope to establish a soul connection with everyone who explores my work. Some stories speak freely while others require some excavation. Growing up on a farm in Alberta then moving to different regions in Alberta, I have captured memories of the wealth of the landscape in the province. My paintings invite you to explore the subject; quietly discovering what is really there.
Water-based media, ink and collage provide the means for the interplay between chance and control I most enjoy. Beginning with an abstract base of graphite, I discover the subject hidden within as I play. Later I add water media for colour. Working with mixed media allows me to take advantage of accidental semblances of nature as I push the boundaries of image making. My views are unique portrayals of the landscape as if I was a bird sitting on a wire and slowly giving glimpses of what we normally don’t take the time to see. ~ Doris Charest
