Visual Artist Gillian Redwood opens her solo show of 12 large canvases Energetic Universe at 7pm on Saturday, February 7th 2015. Fascinated by the science of optics and the behavior of light, the artist uses dynamic lines to express relationship. “With transparency and movement, I paint this alternate view of reality, where instead of forms and object governing my vision, the energetic world is in focus.”
Energetic Universe refers to the forces that create and sustain our physical world. “Stepping aside from what the camera sees, I interpret my experience in a holistic style informed by the spirit and movement of a scene. All my paintings are referenced from drawings in willow charcoal and pastel. I find these materials give the strength of line and delicacy that I need. From these initial sketches the composition emerges and has the benefit of immediacy. This acts as a springboard to inspiration.”
This series of paintings is based on the connection and interaction between people, groups of friends and individuals. The dynamic relationship with the land and atmosphere are woven into the mix.
“I explore the energetics of the universe in my paintings, and express some of these energies in line and colour. I work quickly and in short bursts, usually covering the whole canvas in one session, then layering colour to imitate the layers that I perceive. Every flow of energy changes the shape and density of form.”
Redwood was born in Wales, and moved to Canada as a professional artist in 2004. With a working studio in Victoria, she exhibits nationally and internationally. Energetic Universe continues at the Martin Batchelor Gallery, 712 Cormorant Street, Victoria V8W 1P8. Open Monday to Saturday 10am – 5pm until Thursday, 5th March 2015.
