Sandra Murillo and Tahira Karim with the support of Artpoint Gallery are pleased to present “eNOugh” an exhibit which looks at the violence that women world wide face and women’s strength. The exhibit features the works of 11 international artists spanning North and South America who explore these themes from various perspectives and utilizing various media.
I, Tahira Karim of Calgary, Canada, and , Sandra Murillo of Lima, Peru, began discussing the cultural differences of violence against women within our respective countries. We arrived at the issue of social divisions and thus the problems of gender, violence in the face of violence, and violence within its many forms. This issue of violence is a social problem that is still visible and affecting many women globally no matter of their age, nor of their status. We began to ask ourselves why gendered violence is such a common daily issue globally and on such a large scale? We also asked what kind of strength women need to access within themselves to deal with violence?
“With this major concern Tahira and Sandra began the discussion of a show – a collective "eNOugh" - a self-managed artistic project utilizing the voices of 11 unique artists from different places and backgrounds who utilize different techniques to visualize and discuss this issue. We believe that by using unique perspectives of creative women, globally, and together, that we can begin to truly see and understand this gendered violence from a global perspective and begin to perhaps see connections that have been missed. Thus we can begin to realize new solutions in tackling this disturbing problem. We hope that this project not only showcases the problem of gendered violence but that it creates real awareness that can generate an authentic change and dialogue.”
Within this exhibition, our featured artists are working across multi-mediums from painting and illustration to animation and sculptures. Our artists include cultural artists, experimental animators, sculptors, teachers, painters, and illustrators. Each of us know people that have been affected by this problem. Each of us wants to contribute to this dialogue and expand it.
The Artist seminar will be held at 2 pm on Saturday August 25. This seminar will cover issues in violence that women face between North and South America and will discuss ways in which these issues can be addressed.
