Portage la Prairie has a very diverse arts scene and this group of artists have been involved with the Portage & District Arts Centre for many years. Sharon Green, Annette Henderson and John Nielsen met and became friends when the Art Gallery was located on Saskatchewan Avenue. When time permits they enjoy getting together and creating art. At these informal gatherings they share stories, ideas and sometimes critique each other’s works. If you talk to any of them you will soon recognize that art is their passion. They had similar experiences growing up on farms in rural Manitoba, learning creative ways to create art with limited resources.
When they first started discussing the possibility of a group exhibit, they thought back to how they first met in the old gallery and how that space gave them the opportunity to pursue their passion. Sometimes they got sidetracked sharing stories, but they eventually turned back to discussing their proposed exhibit. Even though months go by between visits, these three friends pick up right were they left off at the last encounter. Their styles, practices and growth may evolve but their friendship remains constant. They decided on the title Fixtures, as it embodies who they are together and separate.
For this exhibit they have chosen to feature works that resonate with their individual styles. Sharon has created new acrylic paintings that she calls her Moon Series. John has selected to show his photography featuring candid shots of people and places. Annette, who is a multi-media collage artist, will be showing a collection of her found object works alongside an assortment of drawings. Together they will have approximately 60 pieces of various sizes and mediums.
