Ted Godwin, "Canada Flag," 1965
neon, 24" x 36" x 6"
In response to the governments challenge to artists to create a new Canadian flag in 1965, Ted Godwin drew on his neon skills and created the above Canadian Flag. Believing that flags are anachronisms left over from a pre-20th century mindset, he determined to make a flag that was contemporary, changeable, and on the cutting edge of communications technology. The bulbs and neon strips in this sign flash on and off in variable sequences, or expand and contract in waves.
“The rate of flashing would be governed by the state of the country at any one time. In times of great angst and upheaval everything would flash like crazy; in times of peace the flashing was very slow.” – Ann Davis, A Dionysian Journey: Ted Godwin’s Regina Paintings
