Jan was born in Prague. His first private lessons were under the Czech teacher Roman Benes. Jan left his homeland in 1968 and following three months of dramatic life in a refugee camp, arrived in Canada in February 1969. After a short stop in Owen Sound, Ontario, Jan continued his fine art study at the University of Windsor. He later studied Landscape Architecture at the University of Toronto and the Master of Theology with specialization of Psychology of Counseling.
Jan's early work was in tempera, watercolor and oil. He also did printmaking, sculpture and acrylic. He has made Calgary his home last 30 years and works mostly in oils and acrylic as full time artist. He become a member of Calgary Sketch Club in 1979. Jan has exhibited at numerous art shows in and around Calgary. His paintings are in many corporate and private collections in Europe and North America.
Jan Chalupnicek loves to paint in deep contrast of light and dark. Strong sunshine is obvious in his painting. He loves to paint landscapes and the Rocky mountains and wants to share God's beauty.
