Josephine Fletcher had the privilege of receiving encouragement and mentorship from renowned artists during her youth, who recognized her exceptional talent. Her journey as a full-time artist began at just 17, when she won a scholarship to the Banff School of Fine Art in 1978. She furthered her education at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, graduating in 1983.
For many years, she lived on Hornby Island, where she passionately captured the beauty of the West Coast in her paintings. Her work was showcased in the Hornby Island community hall, and she enjoyed numerous sold-out exhibitions. Now residing on Salt Spring Island, Josephine continues to thrive as an artist. Many of her paintings found homes when people encountered her painting plein air on the beach or in the forest.
We discovered Josephine two years ago and were captivated by her bold brush strokes and her incredible ability to convey emotion through her art. Remarkably, after nearly 50 years of painting, Josephine has remained true to her artistic vision—a rare achievement in today’s art world, where many compromise for commercial success.
We are thrilled to share Josephine’s life and work with a broader audience. Please join us in meeting her on Saturday, October 19th, from noon to 3 PM.
