In the exhibition The Anatomy of a Storm, Kirk Gower aims to portray aspects of the human experience by using cloudscapes as a tool to reference different moods. Each figure and still life in this series is engulfed in one of the various stages of a storm – from the transitional moment when clouds begin to develop, to the peak intensity of a storm and eventually, the intense beauty that follows a squall.
When creating this series, Gower began to see the people in his life as though they were caught in various stages of their own weather systems. This new work plays with the idea of creating moments of stillness in the midst of constant transition. While many people associate storms with destruction or loss, they can also be catalysts for growth and revitalization. Ultimately, the goal of this body of work is to show life’s mercurial stages, the importance of perseverance, and the sumptuous beauty throughout it all.
“These deceptively perfect paintings boil and bubble with emotion. They reflect the profound care that Gower has for his subjects.” says THIS Gallery Artistic Director, Shannon Pawliw.
