Life Cycles is a large group exhibition featuring new works by local artists from the Hat Art Club and the Medicine Hat Potters’ Association. The contributing artists spent a year making these works in response to the proposed theme, thoughtfully challenging themselves to produce pieces that address the universal themes of birth, life and death. From ceramic sculptures about the loss of a beloved pet to trompe l’oeil deer antlers to generational watercolour paintings, Life Cycles offers a diverse visual narration through a variety of mediums and concepts. For example, Raye Trainor’s painting Water for Life metaphorically speaks to the necessities of human existence, while Loretta Fix’s painting Contemplating Beginnings and Beyond expresses a new mother’s journey.
The Hat Art Club and the Medicine Hat Potters’ Association are integral to the artistic development of our community. These clubs foster and support creativity, and this exhibition showcases the immense talent the clubs possess. Life Cycles features seventy works of art by twenty-nine contributing artists and is on exhibit until January 2025.
