root threads is an exhibition of botanical-themed embroidery panels, inspired by plants in the Canadian prairies and plants from the artist’s Afro-Indigenous Taino/Arawak (Jamaica) culture. Some works in this exhibition were co-created with community members based on Treaty 2 territory (Brandon) and Treaty 1 territory (Winnipeg) during online workshops that took place on July 28 – 30th.
Virtual programming for root threads and connecting thru grasses includes: ‘Lunch & Look’ with mel monoceros & Christina Battle on Friday, October 2 at 1:00pm CDT.
An Embroidery Workshop with mel monoceros on Thursday, November 5, 2:00pm CDT will offer discussion and expression regarding the plants & stories that inform her work.

melannie monoceros:
monoceros is a poet and interdisciplinary artist exploring polysensory production and somatic grief through text/ile. A Black, Taino-Arawak, queer and chronically ill creator, they live in Treaty 1/Winnipeg, MB; home of the Métis First Nation and the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, Dene, Cree, Dakota and Oji-Cree Nations. In 2019, melannie was awarded the JRG Emerging Artist Award for their continued pursuit, integrating technology and accessibility through film via their series “ancestoradio”. In 2020 melannie’s work can be found at Gallery 1C03 (University of Winnipeg) the Window Gallery (Winnipeg) and the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (Brandon, MB).
