The Ferry Building Gallery is pleased to present Mentoring the Emerging Artist, an exhibition of work by students from North Shore Secondary Schools, from June 6 – 25. The Opening Reception is Tuesday, June 6 from 6 – 8 p.m.
The Ferry Building Gallery Friends Society donated a $30,000 gift to Artists for Kids in 2016 to support a two-year program entitled ‘Mentoring Emerging Young Artists’ aimed at students from nine North Shore Secondary Schools.
“The Board members strongly believe in art education for emerging artists on the North Shore,” said Diane Robinson, Chair of the Society. “It was a simple decision to partner with Artists for Kids (AfK) for the management and implementation of this project as they have done this kind of programming for more than 20 years.”
AfK created a 3-day workshop program in which two selected talented students from each of the North Shore Secondary Schools will work with Fine Arts teachers and local artists. Over two years, this funding will provide artist-led instruction to more than 140 students. In year one, three programs will be funded with Brendan Tang, Erin McSavaney and a photographer who will explore visual literacy through sculpture, drawing and painting, and photography. The first sculpture session began on November 21, 2016.
The 3-week exhibition at the Ferry Building Gallery is a culmination of the resulting program that celebrates the learning and the talent that comes from mentorship by professionals in the field.
Yolande Martinello, AfK Director, said “We are very grateful for this generous contribution and for the opportunity to expand our programs and reach more emerging artists in North and West Vancouver.”
The secondary schools involved this year are Rockridge, Sentinel, West Vancouver, Handsworth, Carson Graham, Argyle, Windsor, Sutherland, Seycove and the AFK Studio Art Academy.
