The Inuit Gallery of Vancouver is pleased to present a selection of drawings by Kudluajuk Ashoona and her two daughters, Padloo and Nicotye Samayualie. Each working in their distinctive style while obviously relating to the others' work.
Kudluajuk's works are very narrative and literal. Her drawings often depict scenes of contemporary life, family outings as depicted in several of the included works. They can be seen as snap shots, even as still life, as in the kamiks ready to be worn again.
Padloo's work can be a bit more enigmatic and she furthers this by sometimes making it a seek and you shall find exercise to find her signature. There is also a delightful sense of humour at play, what with the drawing of jelly beans and the woman made of pebbles. She also has a specific interest in architecture and design and it was those that led her to be a participant in the artist in residence program at the Brooklyn Museum in 2016 where those two subjects are a connecting motif in the museums objects and activities.
Nicotye brings a rigorous discipline to her work and writes of the complexity of obtaining the effects she creates by erasing and reworking the layers of colour she employs. She revels in a range of subject matter, fascinated by patterns and arrangements of disparate objects and shapes, whether found in nature or in man made objects. The results are both subtle and profound. In 2016 she was part of the TD Bank North South artist exchange program that found her at the Banff Centre.
In the creations included in this show there can be seen hallmarks of other great Cape Dorset artists. The influences of three artists come immediately to mind, the sadly missed Annie Pootoogook, Tim Pitsiulak and Itee Pootoogook.
We invite you to enjoy these images and we look forward to discussing them with you.
