Nicki Ault - Artist Statement
Like many, I have loved art my whole life, but for various reasons I have only recently begun to pursue this passion professionally. In August 2009, as an exploration of this artistic side, I began a blog. In Dec. 2009 I was fortunate enough to join the St. George Ave. Artists' Group in Saskatoon and happily set up my first studio space. In 2013 the building was sold and we had to move. Three months later a new studio location was established with eleven Saskatoon artists and I have been painting here since early 2014. It has truly become a home away from home. I love working in the studio, but I am also a huge fan of painting en plein air, in particular, I love painting in the northern Boreal forest of Saskatchewan. In March 2016 I became a juried member of the Saskatchewan Craft Council. I am also represented by Darrell Bell Gallery in Saskatoon and Assiniboia Gallery in Regina. My work can be found in private collections in Canada, Switzerland, Costa Rica, the U.K. and the U.S.A. as well as corporate collections in Saskatchewan.
I strongly believe it is important for my boys to witness me in this "better-late-than-never" pursuit of chasing my creative dreams. I hope that by doing so they will learn valuable life lessons in facing fears, in perseverance and in goal setting. Most importantly, I hope they will be inspired to chase their own dreams.
I am proud to live in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada with my husband and two sons.
As it turns out I have always been an artist, I just never had the confidence to think of myself that way. I have grown so much in these nine years - I used to wish I could paint like all the other artists I came across. Now I just want to paint like me. I actually want to be different! My immediate goal is to continue to find my unique voice through paint. Although my work is representational, I am not necessarily aiming for precise realism, but rather for an expression of how I see and feel the subject in that moment. Ultimately I hope to show my love for the natural world through my brushstrokes, compositions and colour choices.
