Winnipeg artist Diana Thorneycroft is no stranger to thought provoking work. The tabletop tableaus that she creates and then skillfully photographs evoke emotions that range from whimsical and amusing to controversial and disturbing. Thorneycroft’s work challenges the viewer to reflect, sometimes with a laugh or with discomfort, on something that is revealed about ourselves that we may like or not.

This exhibition is selected from four bodies of Thorneycroft’s work that deal with Canadian identity, culture and history. It explores the relationship between the Canadian landscape and national identity by incorporating iconic animals, imagery and personalities. It also focuses on crimes against humanity that challenge the myth that Canada views itself and is viewed by others as inherently “good.”

Typical Canadians are known to say “I’m sorry, eh.” Diana Thorneycroft says, "I sincerely apologize for not being sorry.”
