Since the end of the Ice Age the Cypress Hills have stood like a great island in an arid sea. “The hills that never were” on the south plains of western Canada have played a remarkable role in the history of our great country. Today they are home to an interprovincial natural park and a human history National Park. This exhibition presents new oil paintings which Maple Creek artist, Geoff Phillips BFA, has been working on over the past year. For several years Geoff has been the Artist in Residence at the Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park. His keen interest in the natural heritage of the Cypress Hills comes across in the images of landscape, flora and fauna. Phillip’s clean graphic stylized mark-making and rich colour palette elevate the meaning and expressive power of each scene. Whether Geoff is looking closely at a special plant in the undergrowth of a jack pine forest, or reflecting on the majesty of an animal in its environment, this artist is feeling the significance of the subjects he is sharing.
Organized by Art Gallery of Swift Current with curator, Kim Houghtaling. This is a Canada 150 project for AGSC.
