acrylic on canvas, 40" x 40"
About the Exhibition:
Peter Caden’s exhibit features a series of acrylic paintings exploring themes of optical and/or geometric abstraction. This series uses visual fields of concentric linear elements that create both bold and nuanced color interactions. The pieces have the painterly appeal of something hand-wrought rather than mechanical precision and are reminiscent of the work of other artists who have explored the relationships of colour through optical and geometric art (Claude Tousignant, Wassily Kandinsky, Jasper Johns, Kenneth Noland, Josef Albers). One can imagine that the meticulousness and repetitive process to produce these paintings in various combinations could become meditative or even addictive. In his talk, Caden’s will share some of his inspirations and process.
About the Exhibition:
Peter Caden was born in Toronto in 1955. He recalls that his first significant art influences were the frequent visits to the McMichael Art Collection and the Royal Ontario Museum. The writings of Hans Hoffman and Josef Albers, well known for his extensive research in colour theory have also impacted his studies in mid-century painting and ceramics. He is self-taught and began experimenting with gouache and encaustic in 2007 and now uses acrylic paints, employing a precise, methodical technique. Exhibiting non-figurative images and dynamic color, his current paintings are primarily concerned with creating images that are refreshing, reflective and sometimes whimsical.
Caden’s goal is to create emotionally satisfying art. By integrating color interaction and color association, viewers may recognize a mood, sensation or memory that is stimulating and uplifting. Some might experience the retinal buzz of oppositional colours appearing to ripple or shift – a tension which can be both pleasing and disrupting.
