Winchester Galleries is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition Dialogues of a Solitary Voice, artworks by Robert Burke. Burke is telling the story a silent generation from the North West Territories. This exhibition introduces the artist’s solitary voice and discusses the challenges of his aboriginal-black life of the North West Territories. Burke creates art seeking for reconciliation as he illustrates the symbolic elements of his life.
In his paintings, Burke discusses the social issues and his personal challenges as a black-Aboriginal descendant. Burke is one of the many artists who are confronting colonization through their art. Creating his own elements and symbols, Burke steps out of any European or Indigenous iconography to generate a unique style all his own. His use of bright colours and simple forms are symbolic to his story. Burke’s paintings come from a very personal place of experience, healing, and reconciliation; he is not speaking on behalf of other residential school survivors. While he never had the chance to learn traditional Aboriginal art through his ancestors, he learned how to improvise his own style to express his identity.
