Join us for the highly anticipated opening of "AS I RISE," a compelling solo exhibition by contemporary artist Nicole Melnicky. This captivating showcase will unveil 18 vibrant abstract works that challenge and redefine conventional notions of kitsch, camp, and pride. The opening day of the show will take place on January 15th, 2025, at the Port Coquitlam Community Center.
In "AS I RISE," Nicole Melnicky embarks on a bold exploration of color and its profound connection to queer sexuality and identity. Drawing inspiration from Queer Abstraction by David J. Getsy and Chromophobia by David Batchelor, Melnicky's work confronts how color can signify and suggest queerness, femininity, and flamboyance. Each piece serves as a powerful statement, embracing the complexities and nuances of self-expression within the LGBTQ+ community.
Nicole Melnicky's art is renowned for its dynamic engagement with feminism, gender, and queer sexuality. Her use of bold reds, pinks, and purples imbues her paintings with a potent, bodily quality, transforming personal pain into a vibrant expression of power and reclamation. Through abstract forms and electrified color, Melnicky envisions a mysterious, supernatural queer future, manifesting a dream of a queer utopia and eternal twin flame union.
