ARTIST'S STATEMENT: The works are mostly about the delineation of territory, be it physical, emotional or psychological. Acts on the surfaces of the images, as they occur in time, refer to the way in which particular occurrences or activities create the memories which form the cultural spaces in which we live.
The process of layering colours and materials references the formation of memories, or realities, where each event alters the perception of the previous, sometimes preserving or isolating some of it, sometimes obscuring it entirely. This establishes a kind of dialogue between the past experiences of the viewer, and the presence of the pieces themselves.
ABOUT THE ARTIST: A visual artist, designer, curator, and educator, Calvin Yarush has based his artistic practice primarily in Winnipeg, Canada for over 25 years, exploring the theory of drawing, print, and the delineation of spatial and emotional territory. He taught design and drawing at the University of Manitoba from 1987-95 before pursuing independent practice. He has lectured and exhibited painting, printwork and sculpture across Canada, in the United States, and in Europe. His work resides in public, corporate, and private collections in Canada, the United States, and Europe. He currently lives in Grandview, Manitoba, Canada.
