This show is an exploration of the fascinating concept of “the same but different”. It is such a simple phrase but one which evokes layers of meaning and complexities.
The same painting subject may differ depending on the time of day or the time of year. The same subject may also be interpreted in completely different ways by different artists. A subject may also be represented in entirely different ways by the same artist but at different points in their career.
We have both experienced significant periods of transition in the last few years. Graduations, loss, aging, endings and new beginnings have impacted us both. We recognize that we too have been changed by these transitions…we are “the same but different”. We wanted to explore the impact of these transitions on our essential selves and our art. We hoped to discover in what ways we are the same and in what manner we differ after experiencing the major life events of the past few years.
Expressing ourselves through our art is an integral part of who we both are and how we experience life. Therefore, anything that influences us would be reflected in our art. Expressing ourselves creatively is our way of being in the world.
Through this exhibition, we invite you to join us in the search for what it means to be “the same but different” and perhaps make a few discoveries of your own along the way.
