Tim Gardner, "Beer and Dairy," 2022
watercolour on paper, 18.75 x 18.5 in. Courtesy of the Gallery.
Internationally recognized for his hyper-realistic work, Tim Gardner depicts brief moments in time that have been captured using a camera, and then painstakingly rendered over several days into watercolour paintings. New watercolours by Gardner depict ideal natural settings and commercial scenes, from gold panners sifting along river banks, to grocery store aisles, and luminous bottles of vintage Canadian whisky. While Gardner’s figures in landscapes draw a connection to classical painting, he provides a glimpse into ordinary lives, reflecting on contemporary narratives connected to a Canadian identity.
Tim Gardner’s work is held in numerous collections including the National Gallery of Canada, Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMoMA). He has a forthcoming survey exhibition at the Winnipeg Art Museum in 2023, accompanied by a major publication.
