"Understanding Aboriginal Art in Canada Today"

Local curators Chris Creighton-Kelly and France Trépanier will discuss their recently completed report Understanding Aboriginal Art in Canada Today.

France Trépanier and Chris Creighton-Kelly were recently awarded the first Audain Aboriginal Curatorial Fellowship at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Understanding Aboriginal Art in Canada Today is the culmination of a year-long investigation by Creighton-Kelly and Trépanier. For their research, Creighton-Kelly and Trépanier employed an indigenous research framework, one that centers on understanding artistic production by aboriginal artists.

The report also focuses on articulating the significant gaps of understanding between the Western art systems and the creative practices of indigenous communities across this country. Creighton-Kelly and Trépanier report creates a space for the voices of aboriginal communities across Canada to illuminates the significance of aboriginal artistic production.

Understanding Aboriginal Art in Canada Today was commissioned by the Canada Council for the Arts, and will be available on the Canada Council for the Arts website in May 2012. Creighton-Kelly and Trépanier’s report is also supported by Artexte Information Centre in Quebec.
