Utopias Constructed III  is part of Republic Gallery’s series of curated exhibitions, examining the conditions under which “utopia” might be found. The third installment will focus on portraiture to explore utopia not only as a physical place – the agora where subjects meet – but as a state of being. Whether on a social or individual scale, finding utopia is a state of inquiry wherein we must negotiate multiple ideals and identities. Far from a quixotic escape, utopia becomes a site of action and confrontation.

Ky Anderson's paintings are personal narratives of layered forms, colored washes and line work that illustrates the visible and invisible connections between the weights, pulls and supports of the landscape around us. Recent exhibitions include solo shows at Sherry Leedy (MO), Kathryn Markel (NY), Frosch & Portmann (NY), Look & Listen (FR) and Dolphin Gallery (MO), along with numerous group shows and art fairs in the US and Europe. She is represented by Zeitgeist, Nashville; Kathryn Markel Fine Art, New York; and Sherry Leedy Contemporary Art, Kansas City. Anderson lives and works in New York.

Yedda Morrison is a San Francisco-based writer and visual artist. She is a founding member of the artist/writer’s collaborative The Collective Task and a founding editor of Tripwire, A journal of Art & Poetics. Her books include Darkness (Make Now Press, 2012), Girl Scout Nation (Displaced Press, 2008) and Crop (Kelsey Street Press, 2003). Her work has been anthologised in Against Expression (Northwestern University Press), Kindergarde (Black Radish Press), I’ll Drown My Book (Les Figues Press) and most recently in Reprint Appropriation (&) Literature  (LUXBOOKS). She is currently represented by Republic Gallery in Vancouver, BC. Morrison lives and works in San Francisco’s Bay Area.

Carol Sawyer is an artist, performer and singer working primarily with photography, installation, video, and improvised music. Since the early 1990’s her work has been concerned with the connections between lens-based media and fiction, performance, memory, and history. Sawyer’s project The Natalie Brettschneider Archive was exhibited in 2016 at Carleton University Art Gallery in Ottawa and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Sawyer holds a Diploma with Honours in Photography from Emily Carr College of Art and Design (now ECU) and an MFA from Simon Fraser University.
