What began as a conversation between four emerging writers and visual artists about the problems and pleasures of using language as both a mode of communication and an art medium became a wider exploration of inherited shapes, toward the as-yet-unspeakable, as-yet-unspoken.
Through collaborative creative acts, local gallery visits, workshops with mentors from Vancouver's art and literary community, and by establishing a commitment to an individual writing practice, Keagan Perlette, Julia Dahee Hong, Vanessa Grondin and Alysa Hullett have produced new work that addresses Artspeak’s mandate to exhibit contemporary art and encourage a dialogue between visual art and writing.
From June 2016 to April 2017 Artspeak ran its inaugural Studio for Emerging Writers program. Led by Vancouver writer Sheryda Warrener, the aim of the studio is to facilitate a dialogue between post-secondary/recent graduate students ages 20–24 from the visual art and creative writing disciplines. The program was specially tailored for students who are engaged with language as a material, and/or who are interested in its narrative and poetic possibilities.
