Wendy Struck is well-known in Medicine Hat for her beautiful outdoor murals on downtown buildings, and in Between she presents three large murals, each poetically conveying a charged private moment, frozen in time. Wendy will paint the largest on site while the gallery is open, interacting with visitors in a painting performance. Along with dreamlike and mesmerizingly detailed sculptures and wall assemblages that evoke homes, neighbourhoods and streets, her works illuminate ideas of memory, time and public versus private worlds.

As she comments, “I feel our personal and collective surroundings are participants in our own experiences. Whether using a figure, a window, or a map layered within a setting, I am suggesting that our environment can represent an experience and state of mind.”

After pursuing undergraduate studies at the University of Lethbridge, Wendy received her BFA in painting from the University of Regina. She has taught art to all ages since 1998, operated her own gallery from 2009 to 2011, and was the coordinator of Medicine Hat’s Street Art Works’ Youth Mural project in 2013 and 2014. In addition to the latter, she has produced six indoor and outdoor murals in Medicine Hat. Wendy has exhibited in Alberta and Saskatchewan in group, two person and solo exhibitions since 1995, and her work is currently touring with the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program, in the TREX Southeast exhibition, When We Were Young. Wendy maintains a studio in the Hive Artists’ Hub in Medicine Hat, with which she has been involved in many roles since 2012, and of which she is currently President of the Board.
