This issue marks the 200th online issue of Galleries West, an impressive feat considering the state of magazines and publishing in general these days.
Publisher Tom Tait started the magazine 22 years ago as a print publication which was also reproduced online. And then, seven and a half years — and 200 issues — ago, he made the decision to switch to digital-only. The team hasn't looked back and just last year expanded to include more national coverage.
In this, our final issue of summer 2024, Barbara Duncan takes you into the mystical world of Japanese-Canadian artist Setusko Piroche. WOVEN: Setsuko Piroche’s Wonderland is on now through Sept. 28 at the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre in Burnaby, British Columbia.
Sarah Swan reads the latest Wendy book from Walter Scott. She's been a big fan for years, but is she still? Find out here.
Videographer Mark Mushet shares his latest video interview with us, this time a conversation with Owen Kydd about making art and his new exhibition, Compositions, at Monte Clark Gallery until Sept. 14.
Ceramic artist Charley Farrero is busy this summer, with three shows on now across Saskatchewan.
Mia Ohki explores her Japanese and Métis ancestry in her show, I Know What It Looks Like, which can be seen through Nov. 2 at the Art Gallery of St. Albert.
And you have one more day to see Carl White’s latest exhibition, Classical Irreverence, at Gallery Merrick. It wraps up Aug. 21.
There's been a lot of news, too, considering it's August — a typically quiet month. The Art Gallery of Alberta celebrates its 100th anniversary this month; congratulations from Galleries West on the achievement.
On the West Coast, Dr. Toby Lawrence has been named the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria’s new curator of Contemporary Art.
And Nawang Tsomo Kinkar has just been named the Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG)-Qaumajuq’s new TD Curatorial Fellow. Congrats to both Dr. Lawrence and Nawang Tsomo Kinkar on their new appointments.
As always, thanks for reading. We at Galleries West all appreciate it.
