From the Editor
The end of the year is when we traditionally look back. So, over the last two weeks, Galleries West has unspooled Reboot 2018 – six articles that look at notable trends and exhibitions from the past year.
It gave me a chance to tie up a few things I’d wondered about, like why galleries in Western Canada seem to be organizing more shows about art from India and its diaspora.
Another themed story fell into place easily – the wide range of Indigenous art shows that we covered in 2018.
Others, like Gender in Question and Earth in Crisis, echoed larger societal concerns.
Controversy over the National Gallery's planned sale of a painting by Marc Chagall pointed to the need for a round-up of developments related to historical art.
Perhaps I was thinking of a recent visit to the dentist when I titled the final piece Amalgam. Yes, dental fillings can be amalgam, a blend of liquid mercury and a metal alloy, but the word can relate to any mixture. So here, I rolled together 10 noteworthy shows that didn’t fit elsewhere.
Looking ahead to the next issue, expect reviews of Punk Orientalism, a group show at the MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina, and Ruffled Follicles and a Tangled Tongue, Jennifer Rose Sciarrino’s show at the Southern Alberta Art Gallery in Lethbridge. We also have a story that looks at ongoing efforts to tour art shows through small communities in Western Canada.
I wish you all the best for the New Year.
Until next time,
