Greetings from sunny Calgary! There's a lot to read this issue of Galleries West, starting with Canadian writer Christopher Varley, who has some opinions about an open letter to the arts community from Michelle Chawla, Canada Council for the Arts Director and CEO, released a few days ago. Is she preaching to the choir, as he suggests? Read it and form your own opinions; we look forward to your feedback.
Also check out There is No Work in the Arts, But So Much to Be Done, Agnieszka Matejko's latest for Galleries West, about the exhibition of the same name on now through Nov. 16 at Latitude 53 in Edmonton.
Nancy Tousley explores Karen Tam's new show, Sea of Clouds, on view now through Nov. 23 at Illingworth Kerr Gallery in Calgary. “The framework of Sea of Clouds...is the North American world’s fair, but its animating spirit is the playful energy of a Chinese concept called shanzhai,” Tousley writes.
Subject to Change: Writings and Interviews by Liz Magor came out a couple of years ago, but deserves to be revisited, says Katherine Ylitalo. “Magor crafts her language with careful attention to the specificity of words, making each entry a rewarding read,” says Ylitalo.
Then we head to Edmonton's Bugera Matheson Gallery for a stroll through more than 60 years of art with painter Les Graff who also helped establish the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. His work is on view until Nov. 9.
If I could transport myself to Japan this week, I would, just to see A Whisper in the Eye of a Storm, a powerful new installation by Canadian artists Caitlind R.C. Brown & Wayne Garrett. It's on now through Nov. 4 at the Northern Alps Art Festival in Omachi, Japan.
By the time you read this, Art Toronto will be over for another year. But Shazia Hafiz Ramji captured some highlights for readers and visitors to the annual art fair in her story, 2024 Art Toronto Returns With Expanded Lineup. (And 2025 will be here soon.)
Thanks for reading and drop us a note when you have a moment. We enjoy hearing from you!
