Fall is here — a time for fresh starts and fresh art. There's plenty to see and do this month across the country.
“Sumptuous yet unsettling artworks that push painting to its extreme and luminous edges.” That's how Galleries West contributor Lissa Robinson refers to Marie Lannoo's new exhibition, In Extremis, at Contemporary Calgary until Oct. 13.
Yani Kong takes a look at a group show, It begins with knowing and not knowing, at Richmond Art Gallery through Sept. 29.
Katherine Ylitalo's latest book review takes a look at Michael Smith: Sea of Change. Published by Goose Lane Editions, it includes an essay by another Galleries West contributor, Nancy Tousley. The book “provides a valuable, intelligent entry into Smith’s art,” Ylitalo writes.
Incidentally, Smith's exhibition of the same name, Sea of Change, can be seen at TrepanierBaer Gallery in Calgary Sept. 7 to 28. Tousley will give a talk at the gallery on Sept. 7 at 1:30 pm.
And Tousley wrote a fun little story for us this week about a museum in France where visitors are being encouraged to show up naked this fall.
Kegan McFadden writes about Alex Turgeon’s show, Waste Land, on view at Southern Alberta Art Gallery Maansiksikaitsitapiitsinikssin in Lethbridge through Sept. 28.
I'm writing this in the middle of a torrential rainstorm. Painter and storm chaser Ian Sheldon turns storms such as this one into inspiration for his landscapes. New Works by Ian Sheldon is on view now through Sept. 5 at Gibson Fine Art in Calgary.
And at Kelowna Art Gallery, Stories that animate us, on now through Sept. 22, features works from artists including David Hockney, Francisco de Goya, Canadian conceptual artist Joyce Wieland, Robert Davidson, Amanda Strong, Osvaldo Ramirez Castillo, Marina Roy, Jérôme Havre, Cauleen Smith, Camille Turner, Ed Pien, and the Royal Art Lodge.
Last but not least, the intense and intricate felting of Canadian artist Robin Wiltse can be seen in Altered Perceptions, on through Nov. 9 at Grand Forks Art Gallery in British Columbia.
Thanks again for reading and drop us a note if you have story ideas for fall. We at Galleries West look forward to hearing from you.
