If you missed the note from the editor in the last issue, you'll be forgiven if you were startled by the adjacent pic!
To our chagrin, Portia retired after the last issue and it was tempting to issue black armbands and go into mourning. But fortunately, our long-time contributor Paul Gessell has agreed to step in on an interim basis while we seek a replacement. We wish Portia all the best as she re-discovers what it's like to have a life after eleven years of total commitment to Galleries West and the craft of writing and editing. Whether formally or not we will always welcome her expertise in the future and be ever grateful for her contributions to the magazine in the past.
In fact, much of this issue was planned and assigned by Portia, from the lead article on Terralik Duffy's take on Pop Art at Winnipeg Art Gallery/Qaumajuq by Alison Gillmor, through Adam Whitford's review of works from the Museum of Fear and Wonder at the Esker in Calgary and from Vancouver, John Thomson reviewed the Lotus L. Kang show at the Contemporary Art Gallery..
Across the country, our popular new Shorts feature previewed exhibitions by Simon Hughes in Toronto; Dorothy Knowles in Saskatoon; two Iranian artists Marzieh A. Fakhr, a painter, and Mahdieh Raiesi, a sculptor, showing in Vancouver; Rehab Nazzal in Montreal and an exhibition of work from more than 25 photographers at the Art Gallery of Alberta.
Watch for a line-up that includes Sarindar Dhaliwal, Ron Terada, Marisol, Liz Magor, Tim Gardner, Jean Paul Riopelle and David Spriggs. Please continue to send your news to editor@gallerieswest.ca as it will still be monitored closely.
Thanks again Portia,
