Madrona Gallery is pleased to announce our first solo exhibition of works by celebrated international artist Ernestine Tahedl, entitled Music Reflection Emotion. Tahedl’s career spans six decades and encompasses a variety of media and subject matter, including stained glass installations, etching, and abstract painting. Tahedl’s works reflect her diverse experiences, combining the luminosity of stained glass with a gestural style to create large-scale expressive explorations of colour and emotive form.
Born in Austria, Tahedl received a Master’s degree in graphic art from the University of Applied Art in Vienna in 1961. As an emerging artist, she worked closely with her father, the established Austrian artist Professor Heinrich Tahedl, to create several stained glass commissions including the church of Christ the King in Klagenfurt, Austria. In 1963 she immigrated to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where she continued to develop a strong presence as an international artist. In 1977 she was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts, followed by the Ontario Society of Artists in 1984 and the Governor General’s Canada 125 th Anniversary Medal in 1993. Additional Awards include the Arts and Letters Award from the Arts and Letters Cub 2000, the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal 2002, and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal and the Golden Decoration of Honour for services to the Republic of Austria in 2017.
Ernestine's works are shown nationally and internationally and are represented in private and public collections in Canada and abroad. A retrospective exhibition of her work was held in Austria in October 2012, and continued as a travelling show to Zagreb and Bratislava to 2014.
Ernestine Tahedl continues to make a major contribution to the arts in Canada as a volunteer in her community of King City, Ontario.
