The National Gallery of Canada is one of the world's most respected art institutions, renowned for its exceptional collections, revered for its scholarship, and applauded for its unique ability to engage audiences of all ages and all levels of artistic knowledge. Created in 1880, the National Gallery of Canada is among the oldest of Canada's national cultural institutions. Its current status as a federal Crown Corporation dates from 1990, when the Museums Act was proclaimed.

Sunshine in the Drawing Room, painted in 1910 by one of Denmark’s most celebrated artists, Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864–1916), is now part of the European Collection of the National Gallery of Canada (NGC).

Jeremy Shaw wins the 2016 Sobey Art Award
The jury for the 2016 Sobey Art Award chose Jeremy Shaw, representing the West Coast and Yukon region, as the winner of the CA$50,000 top prize. He is the thirteenth Canadian contemporary artist under the age of 40 to win the annual award.

Luce Lebart appointed Director of the Canadian Photography Institute

National Gallery of Canada to show Saskatoon collector’s Pre-Raphaelite drawings
