Christmas greetings from Brisbane, Australia aka River City.
Today the ravages of the once-a-century flood of a year ago are barely visible. But viewing the various high-water marks, a visitor is reminded of the practicality of the typical ‘Queensland Bungalow’ home (see attached slideshow), with the living area on the second floor, and garage, open-air parking and/or general storage on the ground floor.
There are also some shots of the pedestrian bridge connecting the galleries, state library, museum and performing arts centre of the Southbank Cultural area with the Central Business District of Brisbane. It has so many cables and towers, it’s like the bridge designer used all the extra parts that Calatrava had left over when he finished his ‘minimalist’ Peace Bridge in Calgary.
However our main visitation objective was the Queensland Art Gallery and its 5-year-old sister, the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) which is huge and claims to be the largest contemporary art gallery in Australia. The GoMA is currently hosting a very ambitious Matisse exhibition “Drawing Life”, curated exclusively for GoMA by Celine Chicha-Castex, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Prints, Bibliotheque nationale de France and independent, Paris-based curator Emilie Ovaere-Corthay, drawing from international, national and private collections. Although this is rightfully the ‘star’ show at the moment, and the only ticketed exhibition, there were at least four other major exhibitions going on in the gallery at the same time.
One that caught our attention was “Ten Years of Contemporary Art: The James C Souris Collection”. The Preview brochure explains “This exhibition honours the sustained and generous support of the Gallery’s collection by Brisbane benefactor James C Souris, AM, who has been gathering an extensive collection of contemporary Australian art, focusing on the first decade of the twenty-first century and paying particular attention to Queensland artists.” It comprises both indigenous and non-indigenous gifted works in a wide range of media, including paintings, videos, installations and works on paper and is complemented with a 156-page exhibition publication. Some random shots of the exhibition are included in the attached slideshow.
