The title of curator Jane Edmundson’s show In the Stillness reflects the somber and leisurely vibe of off-season campus life. To create a peaceful viewing space, Edmundson has dipped into the three-dimensional archives at the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery. The diverse set of works she chose includes pieces by international stars and regional sculptors, including Robert Rauschenberg, Tony Urquhart, Robin Peck, Gordon Ferguson, Vincent Tangredi, Alan Reynolds, Peter Johnston, Alex Wyse, Lorne Beug and Muriel Castanis. Most of these sculptural works have been tucked away for at least a decade, so there’s some excitement in her voice as she talks about the unique Robert Rauschenberg piece, “Tibetan Garden Song”, that will have it’s own little niche in the gallery. “It’s a quiet, contemplative piece so I wanted to give it some space. Also, I didn’t want it to have to compete with a more dramatic piece, say from Tony Urquhart’s box collection.” Apart from guarding against clashing aesthetics, Edmundson is also keen to introduce accessible works to the public. “All of these works are minimalist or abstract, but they reference real objects in the world,” she says.
