There are multiple layers of meaning in the works in theSewing Our Traditions. Developed by YAC for exhibition during the Cultural Olympiad in Vancouver, the show brings together a collection of more than 50 handmade dolls, each depicting styles and techniques of northern and northwest coast Aboriginal dress, traditional and contemporary. Using traditional materials — leather, sealskin, beading — the dolls have a heritage quality to them, along with an aesthetic beauty. Curated by Jennifer Bowen, the dolls reflect the unique skill involved in many of these traditional handicrafts, passed from one generation to the next. Sewing Our Traditions is on at YAC in Whitehorse from June 3 to August 28.
