ALLEN SAPP
May 15 to 25, Canada House Gallery in Banff
There’s a poignancy in the paintings of Allen Sapp, never more so than now, as he reaches the later stages of a remarkable career. From May 15 to 25, Canada House Gallery in Banff will show four decades of Sapp’s paintings, taking viewers through historical views of life on the northern plains, many of them taken from Sapp’s Cree childhood. The scenes depict a joyful, outdoor life, reminiscent of the same simple pleasures found in William Kurelek’s work. Now 82, this show traces Sapp’s most prolific decades as a painter, with work that tells a multi-faceted story of a well-lived life.
