In the midst of installing two major public art pieces — one at the Lois Hole Hospital in Edmonton and one at Cardel Place in Calgary — Barbara Amos will have a show at Bugera Matheson Gallery in Edmonton in May. The public work is all large-scale, based on her Realidoscope series — paintings split apart into multiple geometric shards, and then pieced back together to form an abstract design. The paintings at Bugera Matheson are landscapes, forming the bases of the work that will be puzzled apart and rearranged. All the work is based on the idea of capturing moments of change, and it is all created in the moment. “Being in that place is more important than the work,” she says about placing herself within the landscapes that become her subjects. “It may be a bit like fishing. It doesn’t really matter if you catch anything. It’s all about the experience of just being there, in the grandeur of a simple but exquisite place and time.”
