Directions of His Own pays tribute to the late John Chalke and his contributions as an artist and educator. Chalke, who taught at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, was renowned for his understanding of glazes, clays and kilns. He was intensely interested in the world around him, particularly the geological history of Western Canada, which he often referred to in highly textured pieces that play with the languages of painting and sculpture. Chalke died in 2014.
