It is not very often that one finds an artist whose studio sits on a ridge 7,800 feet up in the mountains. For two weeks at a time in the summer, however, Michael Mathews works in a fire tower in the Columbia valley, keeping his eyes open for fires and painting the Canadian wilderness. He paints intuitively he says, following his instincts and creating landscapes which look as natural as the environment in which they were conceived. Mathews works in warm tones and paints with bold strokes, which give some of his paintings a sense of heat that can only come from witnessing wild fires. Mathews completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Calgary and his work hangs in the Canadian Embassy in Washington, as well as the Canadian Embassy in Warsaw.
