Monika Sosnowska at Southern Alberta Art Gallery in Lethbridge

Monika Sosnowska considers the economic shifts following the collapse of Communism in her hometown of Warsaw with painted steel sculptures that resemble twisted vendor stalls. Her work refers to the Jarmark Europa Stadium, which housed a market that sold everything from imitation Nikes to pirated CDs and DVDs. The market opened with the arrival of capitalism and was closed last year when the structure made way for a new national stadium for the 2012 European soccer championships. The exhibition, earlier shown at the Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver, is her first in Canada. Sosnowska, who represented Poland at the 2007 Venice Biennale, is known for architectural and sculptural installations that transform familiar objects.
